Naturopathic Medicine Frequently Asked Questions:
Is naturopathic medicine new?
No. Naturopathic medicine in the U.S. has grown out of medical traditions from throughout the world, both ancient and modern. The majority of states have licensed naturopathic medicine at different times since its formation as a distinct American medical profession in 1902. Naturopathic medicine continues to grow and evolve, incorporating advances in diverse medical disciplines throughout the world.
How is naturopathic medicine different from conventional medicine?
The main difference is in the philosophical approach. Naturopathic doctors treat patients by restoring overall health rather than suppressing a few key symptoms. Naturopathic doctors focus on finding the underlying cause of a condition and applying modalities that work in alliance with the natural healing mechanisms of the body rather than against them. Naturopathic approaches result less frequently in adverse side effects, or in the chronic conditions that inevitably arise when the cause of disease is left untreated.
In what ways are naturopathic and conventional physicians alike?
The academic training in medical sciences of naturopathic and conventional physcians is similar. Both study modern physical, clinical and laboratory diagnosis. Both can diagnose a disease and predict its course. Naturopathic physicians can prescribe conventional medications when indicated. Both naturopathic and conventional physicians refer patients to other health care practitioners when appropriate.
Can my naturopathic doctor and my medical doctor work together in my care?
Yes, we feel a client’s interest is best served when there is a free exchange of ideas and knowledge between health care providers. Each profession brings specific insight and cooperative approaches can be more effective. Communication between all parties is the key to integrated care. In order to communicate with your other health care practitioners, you will be required to sign a medical release form giving us permission to speak with other practitioners about your health.
Are we accepting new clients?
We are always taking new clients, but Dr. Dengler is not a primary care provider. She specializes in holistic medicine and will provide guidance on how to improve general health using nutrition, nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathy and physical medicine. The advice provided by Dr. Dengler is intended to complement, not replace, any treatment prescribed by a licensed healthcare practitioner.
What does Dr. Dengler do?
Dr. Dengler is a naturopathic doctor specializing in holistic and will provide advice on how to improve general health using nutrition, nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathy and physical medicine.
Is naturopathic medicine covered by insurance?
Since Pennsylvania does not currently license Naturopathic Doctors, insurance does not typically cover our services. With that said, we have had some patients submit their bills to their insurance company and have gotten some coverage. Also, some of our specialty labs may be covered by various insurance companies. In addition, many of our patients pay through their flex plans or health savings accounts (HSA’s).
Is Dr. Dengler licensed in Pennsylvania?
Currently, 26 jurisdictions (23 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) have licensing or registration laws for naturopathic doctors (NDs/NMDs). In these jurisdictions, naturopathic doctors are required to graduate from accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical programs and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination (NPLEX) in order to receive a license or registration. Licensed and registered NDs have a specific scope of practice as defined by their state’s law, and must fulfill State-mandated continuing education and reporting requirements. Pennsylvania is a registered state that is adopting administrative rules and is not yet issuing licenses. As a result Dr. Dengler is not currently licensed to diagnose or treat disease in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The diagnosis and treatment of disease is the privilege of medical doctors, osteopathic doctors, and other health care practitioners licensed in Pennsylvania. Because Naturopathic Doctors are not yet licensed as primary care physicians in Pennsylvania, it is recommended that you continue services with your primary care provider.
What are Dr. Dengler’s specialites?
Dr. Dengler is a naturopathic doctor and works with with a wide variety of conditions from acute illnesses such as colds and flus to more chronic conditions such as autoimmune disease and diabetes. She specializes in women’s health and hormone balancing, gastrointestinal disorders and food sensitivities.
Does Dr. Dengler offer evening appointments?
At this time, Dr. Dengler does not offer evening appointments due to family obligations. Our office follows the schedule of most other health care practitioner offices.
Where did Dr. Dengler go to medical school?
Dr. Dengler graduated from the pre-medical program at Gannon University and then went to medical school at Sonoran University (formerly Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine) in Tempe, Arizona which is one of 7 accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America. She then completed a one year residency in family medicine in Scottsdale, AZ with a special focus in clinical nutrition, homeopathy and environmental medicine.

The basic theory is that Qi (chee) or an “energy force” moves through the body in pathways called meridians. How many treatments will I need?

Chiropractic Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects.
The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current literature shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.
Neck pain and some types of headaches are treated through precise cervical manipulation. Cervical manipulation, often called a neck adjustment, works to improve joint mobility in the neck, restoring range of motion and reducing muscle spasm, which helps relieve pressure and tension.

Cryotherapy Frequently Asked Questions
Is cryotherapy dangerous?
No. The liquid nitrogen that is used as a chilling agent does not come into contact with your skin, and it is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (actually 78% of it). Nitrogen is a friendly, non-toxic gas and is as common and safe as oxygen. In the chamber, a person breathes room air. For added safety, chambers are equipped with an oxygen monitor. A trained operator is always present during the treatment to control the temperature levels and monitor your comfort. Additionally, using the cryochamber will not cause you to catch a cold. The stimulation of the immune system can actually help decrease the severity and frequency of future colds.
How will I feel after a session and what frequency should I use it to feel benefits?
Full body cryotherapy stimulates the body to release endorphins, the hormones that make us feel alert and energetic. The energizing effects from each session typically last 6 to 8 hours post treatment. The more treatments you do in close succession, the longer the endorphin high lasts. Many clients also report improvements in their sleep quality after cryotherapy. Depending on your physical condition, you may feel immediate relief from joint and muscle pain, improved energy, and increased flexibility that will last for several hours or even days. While every therapy session is beneficial and you’ll feel immediate results, research has shown that you will experience improved and cumulative benefits after a minimum of 10 sessions within a 2 or 3 week period. To achieve peak performance, clients might benefit from having up to two sessions a day with a minimum of 4 hours between sessions.
How does whole body cryotherapy compare to an ice bath?
Whole body cryotherapy treatments result in a very different response from the body compared to traditional ice baths. 2 to 3 minutes in the cryosauna, which is a cold, dry nitrogen vapor, is equivalent to 20-30 minutes in an ice bath without the uncomfortable feeling of submerging in ice cold water. The nitrogen vapor chills the top layers and cold receptors, lowering the outer body’s temperature 30-50 degrees. This reduction causes the brain to restrict blood flow to your extremities, which is the body’s natural fight or flight response to extreme cold. The body reacts to full body cryotherapy by releasing anti-inflammatory proteins and endorphins resulting in supercharged blood. 15 minutes in an ice bath of cold water initially causes the body to move blood to the extremities and results in a lowering of the body’s core temperature. Ice baths do not supercharge the blood like whole body cryotherapy.
What should I wear during a cryotherapy treatment?
The most important safety precaution is that the client and their clothing are completely dry upon entering the chamber. Because of the very low temperatures, clients are required to wear cotton or wool foot and hand protection plus either cotton underwear or a bathing suit to protect intimate parts (for men). All other clothing is removed. Jewelry should not be worn. Showering is not necessary before or after cryotherapy. The entire procedure is dry and does not make your skin wet. Many clients come by during their lunch break since the entire treatment is only three minutes long. We can accommodate many scheduling requests.
Is there anyone who should not do cryotherapy?
Anyone who is pregnant, has severe unmanaged hypertension (BP > 180/100), has a cardiac pacemaker, is being treated for cancer, has deep vein thrombosis, acute or recent myocardial infarction (heart attack), uncontrolled seizures, fever, unstable angina pectoris, Raynaud’s syndrome, cold allergy, acute kidney and urinary tract diseases, open wounds or ulcers, or is under the influence of drugs or alcohol is advised not to use cryotherapy.
What if I am claustrophobic?
Throughout the entire Whole Body Cryotherapy process, your head is kept outside of the sauna and is constantly exposed to normal, room temperature air. The door to the Cryosauna closes but does not lock, so you are always in control. In addition a trained operator is always present to ensure your maximum safety.
Can cryotherapy affect metabolism?
Whole Body Cryotherapy “tricks” your body into implementing the same responses it would if you were freezing without the discomfort. Your body works much harder than normal in order to heat your body up. Consequently, it’s been reported that 500-800 calories are burned as a result of each session.
Will I have to redo my hair/make-up after a session?
No, because your head and face are never submerged or inside of the Cryosauna, it’s possible to have a full session and return to work right afterwards. From the time you walk through the doors until the time you leave will generally take no longer than 15 minutes.
Reiki Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any side effects from a reiki session?
Most of the time a person will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment. However, sometimes a person will have what is called a healing crisis. As a person’s vibration goes up, toxins that have been stored in the body will be released into the blood stream to be filtered by the liver and kidneys and removed from the system. When this happens, sometimes a person can get a headache or stomach ache or feel weak. If this happens, it is a good idea to drink more water, eat lighter meals and get more rest. The body is cleansing as part of the healing process so this is a good sign.
Is reiki a religion?
Although Reiki energy is spiritual in nature, Reiki is not a religion. Practitioners are not asked to change any religious or spiritual beliefs they may have. They are free to continue believing anything they choose and are encouraged to make their own decisions concerning the nature of their religious practices.
Where does reiki energy come from?
Reiki energy is a subtle energy. It is different than electricity or chemical energy or other kinds of physical energy. Reiki energy comes from the Higher Power, which exists on a higher dimension than the physical world we are familiar with. When viewed clairvoyantly, Reiki energy appears to come down from above and to enter the top of the practitioners head after which if flows through the body and out the hands. It appears to flow this way because of our perspective. However, the true source of Reiki energy is within ourselves. This does not mean that we use our personal energy when we do Reiki, but that the energy is coming from a transcendental part of ourselves that is connected to an infinite supply of healing energy.
What does a reili treatment feel like?
What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. However, feelings of deep relaxation are usually felt by all. In addition, many feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. As the Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings a state of peace and well-being is experienced. Some drift off to sleep or report floating outside their bodies or have visions and other mystical experiences. At the end of the treatment, one feels refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.
What is lineage?
Reiki is a technique that is passed on from teacher to student over and over. If one has Reiki, than she/he will be part of a succession of teachers leading back to the founder of the system of Reiki one is practicing. In the case of Usui Reiki, the lineage would lead back to Dr. Usui.
Is reiki safe during pregnancy?
Since Reiki is guided by the Higher Power, the Reiki energy will know the condition of the client or student and adjust appropriately. Reiki can only do good. Many pregnant women have received treatments with great benefit to them and their unborn child. It has also been used during child birth. Pregnant women have also taken the Reiki training and received the Reiki attunement with beneficial results.
